Telling a drummer to hit the drums lighter/softer (first of all is NOT very metal...lol) is like telling someone to play a guitar with a foreign picking style. If it doesn't come natural it won't ever sound right. If the rest of the band can already hear themselves and the mix sounds good to the crowd what you want to do is get a good MID RANGE monitor. With a 15 and a horn, you're getting the 2 frequencies he doesn't need and won't cut or help. A nice 2x12 slant monitor will work great. Pump the mids in the eq and you shouldn't even have to turn the monitor up too loudly. Don't worry about the mix thru this as it's only a refrence, but he'll be able to hear everything this way and you won't be turning up for him every other song.
