I'm thinking of getting a new amp. My ideal tone is Fair Warning-era EVH. I also like some newer, heavier tones, e.g., Zakk Wylde and Jon Donais (Shadows Fall). I'd like to spend less than $1500.
I play in the basement for my own amusement, though I could, someday, play in a band again if I found the right situation.
I am currently using a Pod XT Live into the effects return of a Marshall 3203 (solid state pre-amp, tube power amp), into a Marshall 1960A w/75 watt Celestions. I like my sound but would like to improve it, and I'm thinking I might make the jump into the world of tube amps.
There is very little to try out locally, but from what I've read and heard clips of, I'm thinking of a Peavey JSX or a Splawn Competition. I'd be up for a Marshall, too, but from what I've read, the new Marshalls (JCM 2000) are not very well regarded - and while I know that many like the old JCM 800s, I'd prefer to get something new with a warranty. Speaking of Marshalls, the JVM looks cool, but I think it's probably out of my price range.
One more, lower-priced alternative would be to get a Vox Valvetronix - either the AD120VTH ($599) or the new ToneLab LE, which is listed at $399. One thing I like about those alternatives is that they run in stereo (my cab can be connected in stereo), which ought to help them sound huge. Huge sound is a good thing.
Anyone's thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!
